- British Prime Minister David Cameron said history will remember Margaret Thatcher as the greatest British PM in peace time.
- Decisiveness made her the most formidable woman in 20th-century politics.
- Former prime minister's conservative views and tough political style transformed British politics.
I have to say, it's been an interesting day to watch the headlines from my office desk, though; most news outlets mentioned Thatcher as an amazing leader, while most of the people I follow on various social media sites pointed out the number of people Thatcher's policies ultimately hurt and frowned upon her glorification.
To help readers learn a little about Thatcher quickly, I'm including a short YouTube video made about a year ago - the first two minutes are a decent history presentation, while from that point on it becomes an opinion video:
I mention this because it's curious to me to see that when opinions about her remain split even now. For all of the praise being spoken today, she has received plenty of criticism over the years, especially over the fact that her policies often divided rather than united a nation.
With such a large gap between the two dominating views of this deceased leader, I guess a part of me is wondering, when a person of high stature passes on, do we feel obligated to give them a kind send-off no matter what? Is that was this line of reporting is a sign of?
Or, as mentioned in this article, maybe she deserves all the respect she is receiving because "what marks a great leader, from those other not-so-great leaders, is the sheer weight of personality. Thatcher had that, in spades."
I truly don't know. And I actually don't feel qualified to make any definitive statements, given that I live in the states and do not feel comfortable speaking for the people who were truly affected by Thatcher, for the best or the worst.
Well, no matter where you fall on the matter, what truly matters is that a family lost one of their own today - and perhaps the media's kind acknowledgement of this deceased human being, despite her imperfections, is just an attempt at a kind send-off and a sign of condolences for the grieving people who must live on.
