This blog post will not be a very deep or thoughtful one. So pardon this obvious statement: we as a species would be extraordinarily different without language.
But how many of us have stopped to actually consider this fact? Really consider it?
I think that for many of us, language is something that we more or less take for granted. How many of us have stopped to consider that is a social tool, perhaps even a type of technology? How, exactly, has it evolved over time into the complex system it is? And why, exactly, do we think it even evolved in the first place?
