Its fighters have massacred and mutilated civilians and destroyed remote villages. Girls as young as eight have been kidnapped and forced to serve as sex slaves, while boys become child soldiers, brutalized by being forced to slice off prisoners' lips and noses. Adults and children are routinely whipped, beaten and hobbled to prevent them escaping.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees estimates the LRA has killed more than 2,000 people, kidnapped another 2,600 and forced more than 400,000 to flee their homes since 2008.
This follows its 22-year reign of terror in Uganda, where it is estimated to have killed nearly 500,000 people and made two million homeless. It has also abducted more than 25,000 children to use as killers or sex slaves."
As the holiday season hits its peak, please remember: not everyone is as blessed as citizens like I. Some of us have a house to go to, living family, friends, blankets, income, food, and education - not to mention, Internet that lets me type this and lets you read this. Others have nothing. Others live in fear every day.
Take the time this holiday season to think about people in need; and maybe for the New Year, your resolution could be to do something more than just know about the issues?
